The US does not intend to resume duties on steel from the EU

The United States is not going to return duties on European steel, established in 2018 by ex-President Donald Trump. This was announced by the American ambassador to the EU Mark Gitenstein.

In 2021, against the background of cooperation between the United States and the European Union under the Global Agreement on Sustainable Steel and Aluminum (GSA), US duties on European steel were suspended: 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum. The European Union, in turn, also suspended the retaliatory duties.

It was expected that the GSA agreement would be signed at the summit in Washington last week, but this did not happen. This delay has raised concerns about the possible return of reciprocal duties. Nevertheless, the parties intend to agree on the document by 2024.

At the same time, Gitenstein noted that the United States will not impose duties back, but will continue to use the quota system for duty-free trade if it takes more time to reach agreements.
