Moscow and Baghdad intend to sign a memorandum on cooperation in the field of non-energy and peaceful use of nuclear technologies. This was stated by the economic adviser of the Russian Embassy in Iraq Ilya Lobov.

The diplomat noted that in addition to cooperation in the nuclear field, the parties also intend to cooperate in the field of education – in the form of admission of Iraqi students to study at Russian specialized universities.

According to Lobov, Iraq has traditionally shown interest in Russian nuclear energy: Back in 1975, an agreement on cooperation in the use of atomic energy was signed between the two countries. Currently, the parties have resumed the negotiation process on establishing partnership in this area.

In particular, Rosatom and the Iraqi Agency for the Control of Radioactive Materials are considering the possibility of implementing small projects in the field of low-power research reactors, as well as non-energy applications of nuclear technologies in medicine, agriculture and water desalination.

Earlier, Russia has already declared its readiness to supply isotope products to Iraq and to assist Baghdad in the field of non-energy applications of nuclear energy.
