The National Chamber of Entrepreneurs of Kazakhstan «Atameken» announced that the amount of damage from the riots in the country has increased to $220 million. A day earlier, this figure reached $215 million.

Representatives of the Chamber also noted that 1,528 affected business entities and 1,709 facilities were identified in nine regions, including 1,408 entities and 1,578 facilities in Alma-Ata. Among the most affected areas are trade, catering, financial sector and logistics.

Mass protests in Kazakhstan began in the first days of 2022, when residents of cities in the west of the country opposed a twofold increase in prices for liquefied gas (from 60 to 120 tenge per liter). Later, the protests spread to other cities, including Alma-Ata, the old capital and the largest city of the republic: looting and armed attacks by militants on state institutions began there.

The Kazakh authorities imposed a state of emergency throughout the country until January 19 and launched a counter-terrorism operation. In addition, on January 5, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev dissolved the government and headed the Security Council. The first decision of the organization was to seek help from the CSTO, which subsequently sent a collective peacekeeping force to Kazakhstan to normalize the situation in the country.
