Trump threatens the EU and Canada with new tariffs

US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to impose even tougher tariffs on imports from the European Union and Canada if they join forces to inflict economic damage on America. On his Truth Social platform, he emphasized that tariffs would significantly exceed previously announced measures. 

The already announced duties of 25% on car imports, which will take effect on April 2, have led to tension in global financial markets. Under their influence, there is a decline in the share price of automakers in the United States and Asia, and a similar reaction is expected for European companies.

White House Adviser Will Scharf noted that such measures can bring the States over $100 billion in annual revenue. So far, the EU and Canada have not announced joint retaliatory actions, but they have hinted at the possibility of their implementation. 

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU would defend its economic interests, giving preference to negotiations. At the same time, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described Trump's initiative as a «direct attack» and announced a planned government meeting to discuss a possible response.
