Brazil and BRICS: betting on weakening the dollar influence instead of the common currency

Brazil, which will lead the BRICS in 2025, does not plan to actively promote the initiative to create a single currency for the participating countries. However, its policy may be a step towards weakening the dollar's dominant position in the global economy. This is evidenced by the comments of three senior Brazilian officials.

Possible changes in BRICS policy could provoke a sharp reaction from US President Donald Trump. In recent months, he has twice publicly expressed his opposition to any attempts by the bloc to challenge the dollar's hegemony in the international arena.

According to informed sources, the idea of creating a common currency, which was previously expressed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and participants in previous BRICS meetings, has not reached the stage of detailed technical discussion.

Brazil is currently focusing its efforts on initiatives aimed at reforming the processes within the group. The main focus is on simplifying international payment mechanisms using national currencies. This approach can reduce the dependence of global trade on the dollar in the long term.
