На выходных, 28 января, состоялся первый после официальной инаугурации нового президента США телефонный разговор глав двух государств. Общественность ожидала, что в ходе переговоров будет затронута волнующая многих тема отмены антироссийских санкций, однако президенты так и не подняли этот вопрос. Ранее, на пресс-конференции после встречи с премьером Великобритании, Дональд Трамп упомянул, что обсуждать отмену санкций пока слишком рано и несвоевременно. 

В ходе телефонного разговора президентами России и США были обозначены актуальные проблемы мирового характера, бороться с которыми необходимо, прилагая совместные усилия. Кризис на Украине, ситуация в Сирии и противостояние международному терроризму – основные вопросы, обсуждаемые главами двух держав. Также немалое внимание было уделено обсуждению развития торгово-экономических связей между российскими и американскими бизнес-кругами. 

Несмотря на отсутствие обсуждения снятия санкций, состоявшийся разговор был в общем охарактеризован, как важное начало в потеплении политических и экономических отношений между Россией и США.
