Negotiations between India and the United States are complicated by the issue of Russian oil purchases

India has announced holding «constructive meetings» with the United States to discuss a trade agreement, but negotiations are complicated by Washington's demand to stop buying Russian oil. 

The American side stressed that resolving this issue is a key condition for reducing India's tariffs and concluding a deal. According to a source familiar with the situation, the discussions were positive, but no significant breakthroughs were achieved.

The Indian delegation, led by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, offered concessions, including easing import restrictions on genetically modified corn and increasing purchases of U.S. defense and energy products. Goyal also noted that India plans to expand imports of American energy resources in the coming years.

A representative of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, declining to comment on the confidential talks, reiterated Washington's position that India's actions undermine U.S. efforts against Russia.
