Китайское правительство ввело санкции в отношении правозащитной организации Human Rights Watch (HRW). МИД КНР заявило, что американская неправительственная организация HRW поддерживает протестующих в Гонконге.

Кроме того, власти Китая приостановили рассмотрение заявок «американских морских судов» на заход в Гонконг.

Ограничительные меры являются ответом на подписанный президентом США Дональдом Трампом законопроект, который позволяет применять экономические и дипломатические санкции к тем, кто нарушает права человека в Гонконге.

Процесс заключения торгового соглашения между Китаем и США приостановлен на неопределенный срок.
